Dear Folks:
Here are some real figures.
- Premise a $20.00 hardcover book.
- Distributor/wholesaler discount of 55%: Publisher receives $9.00
- Shipping to distributor/wholesaler 5% of retail: Publisher left
with $8.00
- Author royalty on retail price 10%: publisher left with $6.00
- Printing/binding/cover 5000 copies $3.00: publisher left with $3.00
- Advertising $1.00: Publisher left with $2.00 (which is the same as
author's royalty). N.B.: Publisher's gross, and not net.
In addition, the publisher needs to capitalize the whole venture at
$15,000 minimum (for 5000 copies), because the printer wants to be
paid up front.
This is the real world. I hope this helps the debate.
