Sarah -- I litigated a recipe case (not very successfully), and I can tell you that, at least as of a couple of years ago, there was no "definitive" answer on the subject. There are precious few cases. Our judge was outraged at the notion that his grandmother's cookie recipe was subject to copyright protection.
