The following site won't let you perform a trademark search for *free*, but you can have access for a 24 hour period for just $5. They have yearly and monthly subscription options as well.
You do have to call up to register the first time you use it, this takes just a few minutes. And, at that time you can authorize them to set you up with an account that will automatically bill your credit card each time you log onto the site in the future. Otherwise you have to call them each time you want to start a new 24 hour period.
It is very user friendly as well as convenient - I use it numerous times per month. It is also quite up-to-date as I believe they update the database weekly. I have found out about actions related to my tm applications before receiving notification from the PTO!
