I didn't hear about the Springsteen incident, but did hear that Dole had a similar problem when he played "I'm A Sole Man" by ??? (showing my age here!)

Apparently, the Dole camp changed the words to "I'm a Dole man" and it would be played as he came out to speak to a crowd. They claim they had been given personal permission by the songs author/singer to do what they did, but they hadn't received formal permission from the relevant publishing entity. They stopped using the song.
