The problems in maintaining an error-free registry of copyright which can be relied on by others are always there. That is why the Canadian system of voluntary registration (which no one other than ignorant first authors ever use) is so silly. It is incomplete, unverified, and out of date: no Canadian ever consults it except in an effort to defend oneself against infringement suits: "I didn't see the c-notice on the back of the title page and my $1000.00 search of the copyright registry didn't list the book!"

I have proposed that Canada drop this unreliable system as a waste of taxpayers dollars, either through the government's cost of keeping it up or through expenditures by misguided users in consulting it.
