"Fair Use, Education, and Libraries:

Hosted by
The Indiana University Institute for the Study of Intellectual
Property and Education
Friday, April 4, 1997
Indianapolis, Indiana
On the campus of Indiana University Purdue University at
Indianapolis ("IUPUI")
In December 1996 the Conference on Fair Use ("Confu") completed an interim report, following more than two years of development. The report includes proposed guidelines that seek to interpret fair use as applied to development of multimedia works, the creation of digital images, and the transmission of works in distance learning. The report acknowledges that the participants could not reach agreement on such key issues as electronic reserves and the making of copies for interlibrary loans. The public may obtain copies of the report at http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/olia/confu/. The final Confu meeting is scheduled for May 19, 1997, to assess the public's approval or disapproval of the proposed guidelines. The future validity of the guidelines may depend upon your assessment of them.
On April 4, 1997, a "town meeting" in Indianapolis will be an opportunity for the academic community to learn about and to debate perspectives on the Confu guidelines. This "town meeting" is the second in a series of programs supported by a grant from the Samuel H.
