New Web Site Copyright Guidance

I joined this list a couple of weeks ago hoping to gain some insight into copyright issues related to the Internet. I've been monitoring the list since joining it, and I've been overwhelmed at the things that one has to consider to protect against copyright infringement and to ensure that one isn't infringing on someone else's copyright, etc.

I'm the Technical Communications Manager for a large manufacturing company. We are starting to set up our 'net site and I would like to give some direction and consideration to copyright and other related issues; however, I now feel woefully inadequate to do so. I have suggested to the executive staff that we consider hiring an attorney who specializes in computer law to guide us through this process.

I'd like the assistance of the members of this list in preparing a convincing argument to hire a computer law attorney. If you could identify issues related to the legal aspect of establishing a net site and/or provide anecdotal information related to ramifications of establishing a site incorrectly, I'd be extremely grateful. Also, or in place of this, I'd appreciate it if you could point me to equivalent reference information.

Feel free to respond off list. Thanks in advance!
