Knitting patterns are difficult to protect in the US. The problem is you can't separate the copyrighted component (the knit design) from the functional article the design is embodied in/on. This "separability" inquiry is a big element of US copyright protection of functional objects. One thing for you to examine is whether you might be able to use design patents to protect your knitting works.
