Who owns what?

I have been working with a person who is developing a very interesting program with the local elementary schools. She's a musician and she goes into elementary classrooms with music and then works with the kids to put lyrics to the tune. They will be recording the songs (they have a grant from Sony for part of the cost). And will be selling (maybe/hopefully) CDs which will need credits on them.

So who owns the copyrights? She would own the music (there isn't a work for hire situation as far as I can tell; she's got a contract with the schools as an independent contractor), but what about the words? She and the kids? But can kids (well under the age of 18) own the copyright? What about the school? What about the kids' parents?

And thanks for the info on ISBNs; it was most interesting.
