To the legality of socalled "cookies": As far as I can see this is not prohibited by copyright law, the EU Database Directive or even those European laws on the protection of private data that I am aware of. This might be a far fetched analogy but I would compare it to the owner of a mall daily writing down the license plate numbers of all the shoppers/visitors to then see how frequently they stop by his mall. And then he makes the effort to do the same for the parking lots of the malls within half an hour driving distance to see if his customers also go to those other malls or shops.
Personaly I would like a law that requires the site owner to offer those who "land" on his site the oppertunity of blocking the cookie function.
