To his very thoughtful posting regarding inherent problems in extending copyright protection to the creations of plastic surgeons, Jamie Powers added the question:

We can at least begin with the knowledge that many familiar makeup designs (such as Jack Pierce's "Frankenstein Monster" face for Boris Karloff) are protected by copyright. If a particular pattern of facial makeup can be protected, why not a facial arrangement that is a little more permanent? Instinct tells me that a makeup design SHOULD be protected, and a facelift should NOT---but where, and how, do we draw the line?
