Proclamation of Canadian Legislation

The following is an official announcement of the Government of Canada proclaiming into force substantial portions of the new copyright legislation:


            P.C. 1997-1065
            July 25, 1997

            His Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the 
            recommendation of the Minister of Industry, pursuant to 
            section 61 of An Act to amend the Copyright Act, assented 
            to on April25,1997, being chapter 24 of the Statutes of 
            Canada, 1997, hereby fixes


(a) September 1, 1997 as the day on which subsections 1(1)
to (4), the definitions "broadcaster", "collective society", "commercially available", "communication signal", "copyright", "country", "perceptual disability", "premises", "Rome Convention country", "sculpture" and "sound recording" in section 2 of the Copyright Act, as enacted by subsection 1(5), sections 2.11 to 2.5 and 2.7 of the Copyright Act, as enacted by section 2, sections 3 to 5, 8 and 9, subsection 10(2), sections 11 to 14, section 27 of the Copyright Act, as enacted by section 15, sections 16 and 17, sections 29 to 29.5, 29.8, 30 and 30.4 to 30.7 of the Copyright Act, as enacted by subsection 18(1), subsection 18(2), section 19, subsections 34(1) to (3) and sections 34.1 to 38 and 39 of the Copyright Act, as enacted by subsection 20(1), sections 21 to 28 and 35 to 44, subsections 67.1(3) to (5) and sections 68 to 68.2 of the Copyright Act, as enacted by section 45, sections 46 to 49, 71 to 78 and 89 to 92 of the Copyright Act, as enacted by section 50, and sections 51, 52, 53.1, 54, 55 to 58, 59 and 60 of that Act, shall come into force; and
(b) January 1, 1998 as the day on which section 67 and
subsections 67.1(1) and (2) of the Copyright Act, as enacted by section 45 of that Act, shall come into force. *********************************************************************
