I might start out by saying that in academia, it seems to be assumed that universities own the original work of their students, but not faculty, and that this accepted wisdon is probably just the opposite of reality. Note though that I am talking ownership here, and not license, which may be quite different.

Another factoid is that much cheating may ultimately be actionable as copyright infringement, and that if you do it enough, over a short enough period of time, you may have a felony. (But that of course requires a commercial value for the infringed work, which may be missing in most cases of cheating).
