Musicbot could merely check for files that are indexed as a certain type known to at least occassionally be audio (.au, .wav, .ra, .mpg), but it would have problems finding files in databases (for example) or in files not indexed (behind firewalls or indirectly addressed for example). There is no way that Musicbot could access the server logs on most servers (without doing some hacker tricker that are likely to be unethical, if not illegal).
As I tell my class when we look at a few C&D letters' claims, I cam say I'm the King of England, but that won't make my claims valid or my ears any bigger either.
I think the *real* trick will be for BMI to catalog all the occurances of sound files and match them to their artists and copyright holders. Now that would be a valuable, albeit expensive, service.
