Try:
gopher://unix5.nysed.gov:70/11/TelecommInfo/Reference Desk/
You should get a directory listing to browse. I found the "U.S. vs Microsoft" directory and tried to access the files but the server was down or not responding.
FWIW

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Although uniform resource locators (URLs) were originally designed primarily as a mechanism for passing between machines in the network, they have become a de facto (albeit imperfect) mechanism for human's to use in citing works on the network. One of the technical requirements of a URL is that a human must be able to transcribe it. As a result, technically, white space (null characters and tabs) are not allowed in a uniform resource locator (URL).
I believe Netscape's browser is fairly forgiving if you were to enter the white space. However, the vt100 terminal client which ships with the Gopher server installation will not load the URLs cited above with white space. Whether to be forgiving for the user is really a human/machine interface issue. However, from a technical point of view the blank space between "Reference" and "Desk" should be escaped/delimited.
Thus, the correct URL would thus be:
gopher://unix5.nysed.gov/11/TelecommInfo/Reference%20Desk
There is also white space between "U.S." and "vs" and "Microsoft", so the direct URL for the resource in question is:
gopher://unix5.nysed.gov/11/TelecommInfo/Reference%20Desk/U.S.%20vs%20Microsoft
I almost made this comment the first time around. It is possible that this is the reason Tim experienced a problem in locating the resource. - Craig - Received on Thu Oct 23 1997 - 14:13:53 GMT
