You didn't say what country you are in -- it makes a difference. Let's assume the US. Let's assume further that you have fixed your music in a tangible medium, such as audio tape or sheet music.
Then I have good news -- your music is already protected by copyright, automatically. No money needs to be spent. You should nonetheless proceed with the preparation and filing of a copyright registration application.
