I recommend Randy Poe's _Music Publishing: A Songwriter's Guide_ as an excellent introduction to many professional issues that songwriters have to deal with, including copyright protection for their work. The subtitle is "Everything you need to know to make the best publishing deals for your songs," and that's reasonably accurate. I should add the disclaimer that I know Mr. Poe, as he manages the songwriting/publishing business of someone whom I know rather better. His credentials, however, which are noted in his bio, speak for themselves.
As for scoring motion pictures, there are numerous songwriters' and filmmakers' newsgroups and forums (or do I mean fora? Fori?) on the internet, and I suggest you look there. This is really not the group for that sort of advice. If you are in a town with a university, you might like to contact student directors (or their teachers and program administrators) and see what you can learn from them.
Good luck. You'll need it...
