IBM's cryptolope products are the most well known of genus of tools which seek to protect against a copyright violation ("rights management") by encrypting the "content" thereby limiting access to those authorized. You can read their white paper at: http://www.cryptolope.ibm.com/white.htm
A different paradigm is to have a computer search for infringing copies.
The Stanford Copy Analysis Mechanism (SCAM) is a good example of this
method. It is part of a larger initiative on digital libraries in which
Stanford is active. See:
http://www-db.stanford.edu/~shiva/SCAM/scamInfo.html
There is real scholarship at the SCAM site (the IBM page is more marketing) and the scholarly publications are appropriately cited.
