Dear E. Wetzel:
Copyright attaches the moment your work is fixated in a tangible medium of expression, which includes writing it down on paper or saving it to a computer hard drive or other memory media. The U.S. no longer requires registration as a pre-requisite to copyright. However, registration does have some benefits, particularly as to remedies available in the event of infringement, which I will not go into right now, but will be happy to if you want. I believe that you can find the necessary forms to register your work at:
<http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/forms/index.html>
Good luck!
