The U.S. Copyright Office web site (as well as that office itself, by phone or in person) can give you all the information you ever need. It can be found at http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/. In the interim, don't worry (too much!)--you have copyright protection the moment you fix your protectable expression in a tangible form (such as, you write it down). Copyright registration, however, gives you additional protections as well.

Enjoy the web site--it's a good one.
