The article likely is still protected; 1922 is still the magic copyright date for materials published in the U.S. until Dec. 31 at midnight when 1923 becomes the magic year.
Sometimes one simply has to make a risk assessment, and this may be one of those times. It is out of print; it is 63 years old already. Whether the publisher is still in business is another important of this assessment.
Since you are in a university, perhaps you should talk with University counsel to determine whether this is not one of the times that your school is willing to assume the risk for this.
