Actually, as I think someone may have mentioned previously in this thread, it depends on the particular field. I did a fair amount of work on scientific misconduct a few years back, and found that in some fields the practice is to list the authors alphabetically. In others, the practice is to list them by seniority. In still others, the practice is to list them by contribution. This makes determining authorship -- either for copyright purposes or for misconduct purposes -- even more difficult.
