As others in this thread have mentioned, the U.S. copyright law has a compilation copyright. But my example involved the copying of only a SINGLE melody from a songbook. I see no way to infringe the copyright in the other fellow's "selection, coordination, and arrangement" by lifting just a single public domain item from his compilation.
