Many reasons for this: an abhorance to lose control (the longer I control it the better it must be for me), conceiving IP as if it were a piece of land (already discussed on this thread), in order to extend the protection on the lucrative properties one has to have the term extended for *all* IP (how would the Congress deal with a bill to extend the term just for dear Mickey?), among others.
