While I agree with the sentiment that prompts Mr. Roettinger's remarks, in my experience civility is not the hallmark of academics -- well-educated or poorly-educated as they may be. Academic wrangling is often remarkable for its incivility, beside which the arguments on this mailing list are as nothing.

Moreover, many -- quite possibly most -- of the subscribers to this list are not academics, and I, for one, have no wish to misidentified as one.

I do think it would be pleasant if we could restrict our arguments to matters of fact or interpretation, without stooping to personal denigration. With that in mind, I hereby apologize to Mr. Roettinger for beginning this post by harping on his letter at the expense of his spirit.
