Paid advertising provides a wonderful source of income, when advertisers are willing to pay. They generally select publications that look more like magazines, including news, features, etc., than learned journals. SCIENCE is a good example. So is PHYSICS TODAY, published by AIP which also produces many "archival journals." I would think they would sell ads if anyone would buy them.
Correct me, AIP, if I'm wrong.
Having purchased a great deal of advertising, I can also say that the buyers' preference runs to the largest audience relevant to the product or service being offered.
