Actually, AIP sells advertising in its 3 magazines, "Physics Today," "The Industrial Physicist," and "Computers in Physics." "Computers in Physics" contains what we refer to as an "archival" section, meaning refereed articles. Several of our "archival" journals contain a small amount of advertising, namely the back cover, inside front and back covers, and a few pages in the beginning or end. No advertising inside the journal. The journals that have the advertising are the more applied physics journals ("Review of Scientific Instruments," "Journal of Applied Physics," and "Applied Physics Letters"), where advertising for equipment makes a lot of sense. The other journals don't have outside advertising (they have the occasional plug to AIP services) mostly because the readers don't really want it ("a publication loaded with advertising must be a magazine and therefore probably does not contain 'real' articles"). Personally, life bombards you with enough advertsiments that I would get upset if the journals started it too.
