Did anyone hear about the ruling by a California Judge that journal publishers and publishers of collective works can not resell individual articles without the author's express approval? The ruling is described in the news bulletins for the October 19th Chronicle of Higher Education. You can get more information on this at

   http://chronicle.com/

My question is whether this ruling effects publishers of collected volumes who have obtained a signed contributor release that specifically assigns copyright and gives the publisher permission to grant reprint/quotation permission for the article. In other words, would such a signed release signify the author's "express approval," or would "express approval" require the author's consent on a case by case basis?

Thanks,
