All works first published in 1922 or earlier are in the public domain in the U.S. ALL works first published in 1923 or later are POTENTIALLY still under copyright in the U.S. [Need to know if the author/publisher complied with the relevant formalities at the time of publication, and the copyright was renewed.] The analysis is not limited to works made for hire, because "life plus X years" duration applies only to works created on or after January 1, 1978.
