Thanks for all of the responses to my question about European copyright law and recordings of live performances. I am still unclear on one point. If, for example, a live recording of an American artist's performance was made in say Germany in 1980 and that recording was in the public domain in Germany, would the U.S. Copyright Act provide any copyright protection to the recording when it was published in the U.S.? The logical answer would seem to be "no" -- once it's in the public domain, bringing it into another country should not create a copyright in the work. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks in advance.
