A group at RAND Corp used to (still does?) do some good research of civil litigation, including case studies, jury awards, post-trial settlements, and final awards analysis. That's the good news. I believe it was largely limited to property-casualty liability. I don't recall the name of the group, but "institute for civil justice" sticks out in my mind. I did some research on the topic in the late 1980s.

I've done some furtive searches for similar substantive studies of IP litigation without success. You might contact some of the leading scholars directly (Nimmer, Paul Goldstein (at Stanford)) to see if they are familiar with any such research. This is the kind of thing which falls outside the field of law (case studies, jurisprudence) and more in the field of economics (cost-benefit, social justice).

Please share if you do find research information.
