My reasoning was that you'd find more discussion under the 1909 Act when the notice mattered more, but you could also look at the Copyright Office Compendium II relating to the 1976 Act at 1011.01 ("separated name"). I'm quite sure that the Copyright Office has posted the compendiums on its website, but if not, may I suggest a library? :- )
