I'm looking for information about the use of song lyrics in fiction, primarily under Australian Law, but also under US Law. In particular, is there precedent for any proportion of a song being quoted without permission under (the equivalent of) Fair Use? (Anecdotally, an author on another list I read claims to have been required to pay AUD$600 for permission to quote "a single line" of a Beetles song. This strikes me as outrageous, and does not gel with my--albeit limited--understanding of Copyright Law.) Can anyone point me in the right direction, preferably to online resources? Thanks!
