I have a related question. We have created a logo for a non-profit tax exempt company enterprise that has an artistic depiction of a government ship with a slogan--the logo is to be used on business stationery, posters, products and in connection with services that will be part of a sort of museum and tourist site for this ship. The ship may eventually be on loan or owned by the non-profit. This is all being negotiated. The artwork for the logo is original. Are there any restrictions to depicting this ship on the logo or to using slogans the Navy has used to connote this ship on a logo if it is currently government property. Can the Board of the non-profit trademark and/or copyright the logos and slogans in anticipating acquiring the use of the ship, or is the permission of the government or the manufacturers required? Does it matter when the ship was built? There are others out there already who are trying to capitalize on the logo, which is quite attractive, for related enterprises.
