First you write it. It is now protected by copyright. Then you make sure that you (and your publisher) include a proper copyright notice on all published copies. (A proper notice is the word Copyright, the abbreviation Copr., or the circled-c symbol -- since the last has international significance, you should always at least use it -- followed by the name of the copyright owner and the year of first publication.) For example:

     Copyright * Howard Zaharoff 1999

At some point along the way you will want to register your copyrights by filing Copyright Office Form TX, with the filing fee (still $20) and proper deposit. You can get the forms and instructions by contacting the Copyright Office or visiting its web site at:

If you wrote it and it's original, you actaully have copyrighted it. The best explanation of this is at the EXCELLENT Copyright Office site, which can help you get forms to register your copyright and has a pretty comprehensive list of FAQs. That address is: http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/. It's really quite easy and cheap.

You can request forms from copyright office at Library of Congress in Washington DC. I don't have the number handy, but it's a 202 area code. I'm pretty sure the forms are also on the Copyright Office web site -- easy to find through a web search.

Good luck.

To quote from the Attorney-General's short guide to copyright in Australia is reads:

The coyright act does not require the compoettion of formalities    (such as publication, registration or the payment of fees) in order    to obtain protection in Australia, or any other country which is    also a party to an international copyright treaty. Although    copyright protection in Australia is not dependent upon formal    notice, it is advisable for copyright owners to place a copyright    notice in a prominent place on their work. There is no set form    of words for a copyright notice, but such a notice may state: This    work is copyright. Apart from any use permistted under the    Copyright Act, no part may be reproduced by any process, or any    other exclusive right exercised, without the permission of (name    and address of copyright owner and the year in which the work    was made).

In order to qualify for copyright protection in some of these    countries it is necessary that works bear, in a prominent place and    from the time of first publication, the copyright symbol ( a 'c' in    a circle) along with name, address and year.

I trust this answers your question and is of some help.
