Dear Scott,

You've written the songs, they're now your copyright. You don't say where you're based, but in the UK all you need to do to prove that you wrote them first is to post a copy of the songs to yourself - whether a copy of the tape, or the songs written out with chord symbols etc., with your name on it - and don't open the envelope when it arrives. The post-mark is proof that you wrote those songs earlier than the post-mark date.

I'm sure someone with more authority can confirm this, and probably more eloquently. I'm not sure about the band name, perhaps someone else will tackle that one.
