I believe most news organizations redistribute important news through syndicates such as Associated Press, UPI, etc. Stories can be picked up and rewritten without copying word for word. Most news organizations make an effort to develop additional information by their own reports.

The copyright on the original news story protects the investment of the publisher in its reporting ...
