The notices do serve one purpose: In the event of a lawsuit for infringement, they serve as evidence that the infringer was put on notice, thereby defeating the defense of innocent infringement, and quite possibly supporting a case for multiple damages on the grounds of willful infringement. People who ignore the notices might give that a second thought.
