Senator Stevens Proposes A New Intellectual Property Rights Office - The Senate Treasury and General Government Appropriations Bill includes a provision sponsored by Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) that calls on the Office of Management and Budget to develop a plan by February, 2000, for the establishment of an inter-agency National Intellectual Property Coordination Center. The Appropriations Committee noted that an estimated $18 billion in revenue is lost annually to the U.S. economy because of crimes involving the infringement of intellectual property, particularly violations -- many being foreign violations -- related to the computer and entertainment industries.
