INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS Copyright law for Jordan

The Jordanian parliament yesterday enacted a law for the protection of intellectual property rights, a prerequisite for Jordan's membership of the World Trade Organisation. The law also falls in line with the state's quest for increased foreign investment in a country battered by a recession and saddled by $7bn in foreign debts.

The intellectual property rights law will go into effect once it is endorsed by King Abdullah. The king summoned parliament for a special summer session last week to endorse the law and 10 other economy-related bills. The intellectual property rights law is likely to result in lawsuits as many businesses have thrived on piracy in the kingdom. Bootlegging extends to high schools, which allow plagiarism of publications with registered trade marks. AP. Amman
