Ms. O'Donnell has asked for comments on her Q & A guidelines for reserve room use. They seem to imply that a faculty member can not maintain his/her own legally acquired copy of a book on library reserve for an indefinite period, or that he/she can not request that the library maintain its own legally acquired copy on reserve for an indefinite period. I am not talking about photocopies made for a reserve room collection, I am rather discussing the traditional, but currently less used function of a reserve room, that is to provide a shorter circulation period for the legally acquired copy. It is my belief that faculty wishing to maintain a reserve longer than a semester should insist that the library use their legally acquired copy, not some photo reproduction made only for reserve purposes. I should think that under the first sale doctrine this is unassailable. I, of course, would disappointed, but wiser, if the list should point out the error of my thought on this matter.
