i particularly liked the quote from Steve Grady of "http://www.emusic.com/": "We still think the best way to combat piracy is to make it easier to buy rather than to steal." since theft of digital property is essentially unpreventable and largely undetectable (Mr. Levy was only caught because of the large amount of material being downloaded from his site) there need to be significant advantages to purchasing or otherwise acquiring permission to use.
the idea that legitimate uses can out-compete illegitimate uses
is becoming more widespread -- some of my own verbosity on the subject
can be found at "http://www.wolfenet.com/~cgwyn/digitalcopyright.html".
(i also ran across an article recently
"http://www.amcity.com/sanjose/stories/1999/08/09/story5.html" which
described legal purveyors of MP3 files finding that if they didn't
follow record company "theft-prevention" guidelines they made many
many more sales. it appears that "theft-prevention" may also be
"sales-prevention"...)
