I can't resist adding (with apologies to those who have heard this before) that it was, I think, of Parsifal (though it might have been Lohengrin) that someone said it's one of those opera's that is so long, performances have to start at 5 o'clock, and after the first three hours you look at your watch and it's 5.30...

No doubt someone (and I expect it will be Bob) will correct my recollection and give a source.
