Freelancers Win Victory Over Reprints

FREELANCE WRITERS whose material is republished without permission by The New York Times and other publishers on electronic databases have won a major victory with a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Overturning a lower court, the Second Circuit on Friday found in Tasini v. The New York Times Co., 97-9181 and 97-9650, that the Times and other publishers are not protected by the privilege against copyright infringement afforded publishers of "collective works."
