Thursday, November 4, 1999

1:00 - 1:30 p.m. Registration, coffee

1:30 - 3:00 p.m. Copyright Law: National legislation

Discuss the current information of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act. Find out how it affects your library and some of the changes you need to be aware of.

3:00 - 3:30 p.m. Break

3:30 - 4:45 p.m. Technology and copyright

With today's technology, librarians, professors, and teachers need to be aware of patron rights. We also need to watch for any copyright infringements when distributing information printed from CD-ROMS or full-text articles. Discover what we need to be aware of when talking to vendors of full-text article databases or CD-ROMS.

Friday, November 5, 1999

8:00 - 8:30 Coffee

8:30 - 10:00 a.m. Copyright issues and the Internet

What are the procedures for keeping track of copyright from information gathered on the Internet? Do we need to keep track of copyright? How do we determine copyright? Who is in charge of enforcing copyright on the Internet?

10:00 - 10:30 a.m. Break

10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Interlibrary Loan and Copyright management

What is the difference between CCG & CCL? Why is it so important to keep track of copyright? How should records be kept? Do policies need to be written?

11:30 - 1:00 p.m. Lunch on your own

1:00 - 4:30 p.m. It's academic: Copyright and higher education

This session will include two breaks with refreshments. As we move into the 21st century, we have the advantage of taking college courses through distance education and/or online. We also have the ability to create "reserves" online. What are some of the copyright issues involved therein? If a student or professor wants to tape a class, either by tape recorder or by video, is copyright involved? Are we taking advantage of the "fair use" law? As professors, how do we obtain copyright from a publisher, contact publishers, and determine whether or not we need copyright?
