I actually had to go on the eBay to look at the pages -- I have my "own personal eBay" page that I log into when I access. There are no Java banner ads, only buttons for other parts of eBay's site. I went to their home page, and it, again, has buttons for other parts of the site, plus some "grabbers" if you will, to let you know someone's got a ton of bubble wrap on auction, e.g. There are no ads for non-eBay entities (well, except for some tiny logo buttons at the bottom of the page).

Now, on the actual bidding pages, the auctioner may put bright, glaring ads up to alert bidders to additional items he/she may have up for auction. They are specific to that page/item/auctioner, and appear nowhere but in links to that page/item/auctioner.

I believe the actual page where you enter your bidder info (name, password), and the confirmation page are the same -- only buttons for eBay. I'm not bidding right now, so I can't confirm that.
